Major festivals falling on Weekdays have an additional

Style of
Worship:
Worship
at S. John’s is in the Anglo-catholic tradition. We use
Common Worship in traditional language, and at a Solemn
Mass the choir sing one of a wide range of settings e.g.
Pergolesi, Britten, etc. We have an excellent choir
which meets to practice for an hour before Choral
worship; new members are always welcome. On Major
Festivals there is usually a Sung Evening Solemn Mass,
this will be advertised on the notice board outside the
church.
The
Church:
A Grade I
listed building a church has stood on the site since
c1150. There are many fine and ancient features, such
as the remains of the Anchorites Cell, and splendid
medieval woodwork. The church was re-ordered in the
1970’s and features a wrought-iron screen by
Dykes-Bower.
Church
Activities:
The
church is normally open from matins until evensong,
providing an oasis of peace and tranquillity within the
busy city centre.
There is
a regular Saturday coffee morning. Good value fresh
coffee and home baking are available in the recently
refurbished Church Hall.
The Hall
is available for hire and is used by several local
groups including the Compassionate Friends (support for
bereaved parents and siblings) and the Harbour Project
(working with asylum seekers). Other regular groups
include a Senior Citizens Deaf Club, Irish Dancers, a
model club and the Sheltie Dog Society.
