Services:

Every Sunday

10am Parish Eucharist

First and Third Sunday each month

8am Holy Communion Book of Common Prayer

Every Thursday

Thursday 9.30 Holy Communion

Style of Worship:

Sunday 8am and Thursday are said services.

Sundays at 10am are from Common Worship.  There are hymns and a sung Gloria etc.  - hymn singing is a strength.  The style of worship is moderately catholic.  Seasonal variations are included, using specially prepared service booklets.  A parish breakfast follows this service.

Talking over Tea is a discussion based on the forthcoming Sunday’s Gospel and incorporating any topic as it arises – it meets about 20 times a year.

Services, including Holy Communion, have been held in homes of the parish during the seasons of Advent and Lent and this may become regular.

The congregation is mostly elderly.  We use this as a strength, e.g. special services, such as those of Holy Week, and meetings, are held in the daytime.  We incorporate social activities with worship, e.g. Easter Praise and tea in church, and Open Gardens Weekend, including outdoor Songs of Praise.  We try to find physical, practical expressions of faith as this seems really to engage our congregation.

Regular services are held in the care homes of the parish.

The Church:

The building is 45 years old, red brick, incorporating church and meeting rooms under one roof.  The church is simple in style, with a red brick east wall and statue of Christus Rex in the sanctuary.  Furnishings and fittings are in keeping with the 1960’s architecture.

We hold special seasonal services e.g. Christmas Carol Service. We celebrate holy days and feasts as appropriate. The Christmas Lunch for the aged was held in church for 20 years.

The Congregation eat lunch together on two or three occasions during the year.

Mostly, members of the congregation are local and live in the nearby streets, on Regent Farm.  Many have lived there since the estate was built, 40-50 years ago.  There is a network of family and neighbours for whom St Hugh’s is their parish church. Parishioners are kept up to date via the monthly newsletter, St Hugh’s News.
